CONSAWU affiliates in the Western Cape celebrated Women's Day on 9 August 2003 at the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. The decision to pursue and participate in this event emanated on the success of May Day activities.
The committee consisting of PROTUSA, SADAQWU, NCFAWU and WWU mooted that CONSAWU look at Women's Day as another opportunity of showing its prominence. The idea of involvement with the V&A program was to; -
· Conserve cost · Central area · Public prominence
The fact that the general perception of "privatizing" events such as Women's Day and May Day is taking the focus of exclusivity away from the masses. Slotting in with the V&A program was the more logical solution and platform for CONSAWU, who were accommodated after meetings with amongst other, BWU and NCFAWU. The CONSAWU involvement was supported by a meeting of Western Cape affiliates held in Cape Town on 28 July 2003 to the following: -
CONSAWU will participate in a ½ hour slot - reduced from the original one hour prime time slot due to the late response;
That, Thelma Louw - President of CONSAWU and Jane Mandean, SA Paralympic athlete and Nombulelo Moeti, Cultural Group and Youth Achiever will form the CONSAWU presentation;
That the exercise has merit and will be in the interest of CONSAWU to join the V&A Waterfront's program. This was further confirmed at the NSC on 6/ 7 August 2003. The event was successful with excellent contributions by: The President, Other speakers and good CONSAWU affiliate support. CONSAWU in this event reflected very clearly its inclusiveness of women across the spectrum;
Thelma - Strongwoman heading labour organization and acclaimed at the event; Jane Mandean - Acknowledges CONSAWU's commitment to all women irrespective of disabilities; Nombulelo Moeti - That young women should be afforded equal status in our society.
There was an overall acceptance of CONSAWU by visitors in the audience at the event in the Waterfront.
